The “proud to be out” students at Victoria University, New Zealand are set to celebrate”Proud ‘07″, Wellington’s Gay Pride Week. The festival will take place on August 4-11, 2007 at the Kelburn campus of the said school as well as all throughout the Wellington CBD.
The organizers of this year’s celebration, UniQ Victoria, promises a whole range of activities and fun filled activities.
“This year we’re working with other community groups to make Proud ‘07 bigger and better! By combining our skills and resources it means we can put on better events and promote them better, as well as raise queer awareness,” said Laressa Donaldson, president of UniQ Victoria.
Just check out how exciting this year’s Proud ‘07 will be — they have a high school prom themed ball on the first day! It’ll be held at the James Cook Hotel. There will also be “Dance Syndrome” at Our Bar, Cuba Street on August 7. Says Victoria University Queer Rights Officer Rachael Wrigh, “The basic idea was for a dance party for those who like more ‘alternative’ music. We’re going to play stuff like Peaches, Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith, Gravy Train, Blondie, and lots of new-wave 80s hits! So you won’t hear any Steps, or Beyonce here!” Other events include the Search for the Queer Idol (free entrance! August 9 at Imerst Bar), a short film festival, wine and cheese evening for parents of queers and queer parents themselves, an art exhibition (”Short Shorts—A collection of Kiwi Queer short films” at the Film Archive on August 9) and quizzes. The finale will be one of a kind, too — The Glamazons’ Pyjama Party!
Wellington’s Mayor Kerry Prendergast even expressed support. “It is my pleasure, once again, to support Proud 2007—queer pride week in the Capital. Wellington is a great big melting pot of people from all walks of life and events like this help us celebrate and enhance our diversity.” (If only all of our mayors were like him, right?)
Prime Minister Helen Clark is also a supporter. She was recently quoted as saying, “Labour has a long and unparalleled record in supporting human rights, including those for New Zealand’s Rainbow communities. Proud is a week-long, community-focused event and is a chance for Wellington’s Rainbow community to celebrate. All the best for a rewarding and entertaining week.”
Looks like everything’s gonna be smooth and fun at Proud ‘07!
