Happy National Coming Out Day everyone! *w00t*!!!

national coming out day logo This is the time when the name of this website, ShowYourGayPride, perfectly coincides with a certain celebration (well, apart from all the Pride events, of course) Show Your Gay Pride indeed!

The National Coming Out Day logo you see here is the one created and generously donated by Keith Haring to the Human Rights Campaign. Nice!

Speaking of nice — big CONGRATULATIONS are definitely in order for all of you who have made that brave move to be true to yourselves.

In this day and age, amid all pressures, it can be difficult to be comfortable with your own sexuality. It can be difficult to stick to what you believe in. It can be difficult to fight for equality and truth. Hence, if you now feel that you are finally OUT! and FREE and YOURSELF — congratulations and consider yourself blessed.

Congratulations are in order too for those who do not prosecute, malign and discriminate the members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Congratulations for looking far beyond what “small” people see — and thank you for welcoming us into your lives. Blessed are your hearts!

Celebrate the truth today!

Gay British actor Sir Ian McKellen speaks in a video message. He formally opened the weeklong Singapore Gay Pride celebrations Wednesday and called the event a platform to make gay voice heard in the tightly controlled city.

“It’s very important that gay people, wherever they are, should identify themselves, stick up for themselves, represent themselves, modestly and positively, so the rest of the world knows that we’re here and we’re not going to go away,” said McKellen.

The actor is currently on an Asian tour with the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Unfortunately, the supposedly happy LGBT celebration was marred when Singapore police closed down a photography exhibit before it was to officially open to the public. The exhibit showed photos of gay men and women kissing.

The board said that the show violated Singapore law because it promoted “a homosexual lifestyle”.

The exhibition, entitled “Kissing,” was a selection of 80 posed shots of same-sex kissing between fully clothed models.

295189631146.jpgThe “proud to be out” students at Victoria University, New Zealand are set to celebrate”Proud ‘07″, Wellington’s Gay Pride Week. The festival will take place on August 4-11, 2007 at the Kelburn campus of the said school as well as all throughout the Wellington CBD.

The organizers of this year’s celebration, UniQ Victoria, promises a whole range of activities and fun filled activities.

“This year we’re working with other community groups to make Proud ‘07 bigger and better! By combining our skills and resources it means we can put on better events and promote them better, as well as raise queer awareness,” said Laressa Donaldson, president of UniQ Victoria.

Just check out how exciting this year’s Proud ‘07 will be — they have a high school prom themed ball on the first day! It’ll be held at the James Cook Hotel. There will also be “Dance Syndrome” at Our Bar, Cuba Street on August 7. Says Victoria University Queer Rights Officer Rachael Wrigh, “The basic idea was for a dance party for those who like more ‘alternative’ music. We’re going to play stuff like Peaches, Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith, Gravy Train, Blondie, and lots of new-wave 80s hits! So you won’t hear any Steps, or Beyonce here!” Other events include the Search for the Queer Idol (free entrance! August 9 at Imerst Bar), a short film festival, wine and cheese evening for parents of queers and queer parents themselves, an art exhibition (”Short Shorts—A collection of Kiwi Queer short films” at the Film Archive on August 9) and quizzes. The finale will be one of a kind, too — The Glamazons’ Pyjama Party!

Wellington’s Mayor Kerry Prendergast even expressed support. “It is my pleasure, once again, to support Proud 2007—queer pride week in the Capital. Wellington is a great big melting pot of people from all walks of life and events like this help us celebrate and enhance our diversity.” (If only all of our mayors were like him, right?)

Prime Minister Helen Clark is also a supporter. She was recently quoted as saying, “Labour has a long and unparalleled record in supporting human rights, including those for New Zealand’s Rainbow communities. Proud is a week-long, community-focused event and is a chance for Wellington’s Rainbow community to celebrate. All the best for a rewarding and entertaining week.”

Looks like everything’s gonna be smooth and fun at Proud ‘07!

The moment I first opened the San Diego Pride 2007 website, I immediately heard the popular ditty “Always” (by the musical tandem Erasure…can you believe how oddly popular that was years ago?!) playing in my head. Why? Because Erasure’s one of the headliners of this year’s San Diego Pride Festival, that’s why!

The 33rd San Diego LGBT Pride Celebration will hold the theme “United for Equality”. The parade will be held on July 21 while the festival will be held on the 21st and 22nd.

Apart from Erasure, Gloria Trevi and Dirty Sanchez (don’t you just like the name?) are also set to perform.

The San Diego Tribune says of the SD Pride: “One of the most popular events of its kind in the country.”

Fast facts: The San Diego Pride Celebration is the 7th largest in the whole of United States. Approximately 150,000 spectators gather for the parade while 40,000 troop to the weekend festival. As expected, the pride fest is the best attended and largest single day event in the entire San Diego area.
